Accurate · Reliable · Profitable
You bid it at 22%. What did it make?
Most subcontractors can tell you what a job was worth. Far fewer can tell you what it earned. Suncoast Bookkeeping keeps books that answer the second question, for electricians, plumbers, HVAC, roofing and tree companies across Florida.
Three signs your books weren't built for construction
None of this means your books are wrong. It usually means they were set up for a business that sells one thing at one price, and you don't.
Your P&L is one number
It tells you the company made money in August. It does not tell you the Riverview job made money and the Brandon job lost it. If every job is pooled into one column, you are pricing next year’s work off an average that hides your worst customer.
Retainage is invisible
Ten percent of a job you finished in March is still sitting with the GC. It is not income you can spend and it is not a loss. Books that don’t track it separately will either flatter your revenue or hide money you are owed.
The workers' comp audit is a surprise every year
Class codes get assigned once and never checked. Then the auditor reallocates your payroll, and a premium you budgeted for becomes one you didn’t. That is a bookkeeping problem long before it is an insurance problem.
Bookkeeping that tracks the job, not just the month
Built around the trades
The problems are the same underneath. How they bite is different in each one.
Not on the list? The work is the same. Concrete, drywall, paint, flooring, landscaping and pool contractors all run on job costs and 1099s. See how I work with subcontractors.
Three steps, and the first one is free
- 1
Free file review
Send me your QuickBooks file, or read-only access. I go through it and tell you what is actually in there: what's reconciled, what isn't, and what it would take to make it useful.
No charge and no obligation.
- 2
A fixed quote
If there is cleanup to do, you get one number before any work starts. Not an hourly rate and not a range that moves.
- 3
A monthly rhythm
Books closed, accounts reconciled, and a job-costed P&L in your hands on a schedule you can plan around.
Questions I get asked
Do I have to switch accounting software?
No. If you are on QuickBooks Online we work in what you have. If you are on QuickBooks Desktop or spreadsheets, I will tell you honestly whether moving is worth it, and it often isn’t mid-year.
My books are years behind. Is that a problem?
It is the most common starting point, not a disqualifier. Three years of receipts in a truck console is something I have worked from before. The file review tells us how big the job is before you commit to anything.
Are you a CPA?
No. I am a QuickBooks Online Certified ProAdvisor. I keep your books accurate and job-costed so your CPA can file from them without rebuilding the year first. If something needs a CPA’s signature, I will say so and work alongside them.
Do you work outside Tampa Bay?
Yes. The work is remote, so a roofer in Ocala gets the same service as one in Largo. Tampa Bay is where I am, not where the work stops.
Start with the file review
It costs nothing, it takes a couple of days, and you will get a straight answer about what shape your books are in. If they are fine, I will tell you that too.
